Jerkbait Fishing
Jerkbaiting started in the USA, fishing for Bass, Northern Pike and other large predatory fish. This method has now taken off in a big way in Britain & Europe. A great way to catch very large specimen fish. Jerkbait fishing is exciting, as the fish strike is instant and very final. The bait is taken as if it were a live baitfish with the predator not wanting to lose its quarry.
The method of jerk bait fishing is very simple and self explanatory. Cast your lure into your chosen spot, allow the bait to sink to your required depth and start to retrieve with short jerky upwards motions. Short sharp jerks, varying the speed and direction will produce explosive results. Once an angler has caught fish using this method they are also caught. The huge excitement and adrenaline rush will keep them coming back to this style of fishing time after time.
For achieving the best results use braided line rather than monofilament. This method of fishing needs as little line stretch as possible, a tight non stretch line will give your lure a much better movement and action, thus prompting many more fish strikes.
The jerk bait lure selection is growing by the day, many are floating, some mid water, some sinking. Many of these lures are weedless so giving the angler the opportunity to cast into reeds or weed beds where the bigger fish line in wait.
Most people using this method of fishing hold the rod with their writing hand and wind with the other one. As the vast majority of people are right handed the choice of reel is a left hand wind. The most common reel used will be a bait casting multiplier. Some people however will not want to change from their fixed spool reel. This will not allow them the same control over the retrieve, but will still catch fish.
Whatever bait, reel or rod that is selected the user will likely be hooked as soon as they hook that first jerk bait fish. |

Trigger Rods
The Trigger rod is in reality just a spinning rod with a trigger. Used almost exclusively with a multiplier reel, giving a one handed method of fishing. The new jerk bait rod falls into this category, and this rod is usually more of a heavy action tool. Most trigger rods are in the 1.95 to 2.4 metre range, but again today's angler are demanding and using rods up to 3.6 metres.
This is a great rod when targeting the larger species such as pike and salmon, but will be equally at home catching trout, perch, bass etc. |
