Abel Reels Reel frame, spool, drag knob and foot 6061-T651 cold finished aerospace grade aluminum.
This metal offers a strength level similar to mild steel. Cold finishing is significantly more expensive than extruded aluminum; but the cold finishing process dramatically increases the molecular density. It creates a stronger metal.
Laminated wood handles are a highly engineered wood composite known as DymondWood made for us in Rutland, Vt. Handles have the physical and mechanical properties of high-density hardwoods, acrylics, polycarbonate plastics and brass with a compression strength of 25,600 psi.
Teflon sealed bearings are made for Abel near Albany, New York. Precision bearings are ISO9001:2000 and AS9100 Certified FAA TSO C149 Aircraft Bearings, built to the highest manufacturing standards with specific characteristics developed for demanding aerospace and military applications consisting of 440C stainless steel balls with stainless steel rings.
Cork Drag System: Super Series Quick Change (QC), Super Series and Anti-Reverse made entirely in our factory, its the most proven, heavily tested reel drag system ever made. On an Abel Reel, the cork drag plate compresses and serves as a brake. We use a superior high grade Portuguese cork with a little neats-foot oil on it. Our cork drags do not wear; we have 1988 vintage reels at lodges and camps throughout the world to prove it!
Pawl Click Drag System: Trout Series (TR) and Abel Creek A triangle-shaped pawl made from 303 heat treated stainless steel is locked in place by two small hex cam nuts and a spring retainer. To adjust the incoming or outgoing tension, simply rotate the fully enclosed hex nuts with your fingertip and set them for the day.
Hand Polished and De-burred Were the only manufacturer of fly fishing reels in the world that hand polishes each and every part of the reel.
Anodizing Anodizing is an electrolytic passivation process involving chemicals and dyes. The corrosion resistant anodizing of our reels, knives, and pliers is a remarkable achievement in metallurgy utilizing a proprietary process in our own California factory.
Manufacturing Process The same machines and tools used to manufacture parts for our military and aerospace industries make Abel Reels. We have a state-of-the-art machine shop including: CNC mills, CNC lathes, Swiss screw machines and other job shop tools. Abel designs, engineers, prototypes, and manufactures every component in our California factory. We use the finest grade aluminum, stainless steel and other raw materials in each and every product. |
